This week I’m preparing a message on Luke 6:46-49, in which Jesus compares the man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built his house on the sand. Jesus as the master teacher uses one of the most effective teaching tools: comparison. Think of the many comparisons in Scripture. Here are a few:
Light & Darkness,
Righteous & Unrighteous,
Just & Unjust,
Wise & Foolish,
Spiritual & Carnal,
Fruit of the Spirit & Works of the Flesh,
Fruitful Branch & Unfruitful Branch,
Sheep & Goats,
Wheat & Tares,
Godly Sorrow & Worldly Sorrow,
Wisdom from Above & Wisdom of this world.
The list could probably go on and on. Often times, these simple comparisons are the clearest and most concise way to present the Gospel and to challenge followers of Christ to become more like Him. So if you’re looking for a fresh perspective for preaching, go ahead, dare to compare.
